This diploma program will prepare individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the production of sound recordings as finished products or as components of film/video, broadcast, live, or mixed media productions. The program includes instruction in sound equipment operation and maintenance, audio editing, audio recording; audio mixing, sound engineering, beat making, record production, and working with producers, editors, directors, artists, and production managers. This program is designed to prepare graduates for entry level positions, with theory and working knowledge, in the fields of: Recording Engineer, Audio Engineer, Sound Engineer, Mixer, Audio Operator, Sound Technician, Broadcast Engineer, Broadcast Technician, and Sound Editor and other entertainment related positions.

MU-172: Live and Corporate Sound

This course will introduce students to the world of audio that exists outside of a professional recording studio. Students will learn about sound reinforcement for live concerts and corporate events. This course will introduce students to other avenues in audio available to them that otherwise might be overlooked. Prerequisites: MU-151

MU-160: Mixing I

In this course students will learn what constitutes a good mix and the steps required to create one. The emphasis is to provide a basic foundation of mixing. Students will also take an in-depth look at the art of music mixing. Topics covered include: mix set up; panning; mix effects; vocal levels; transitions in a mix; and depth of field. The goal is for students to gain practical and useful knowledge of mixing by course end. Prerequisites: MU-151, MU-156, MU-159.

MU-159: Recording Consoles

This course will introduce the student to analog recording consoles and emphasize the importance of proper signal flow in recording. Signal flow will be the most important tool a student can learn to prepare themselves for a career in audio. Topics covered include: the history of recording consoles; comparison of console models; basic signal flow; sections of the console; automation; troubleshooting; and how to use the console creatively. Prerequisite: MU-151.

MU-158: Recording II

Students in this course will be introduced to the primary concepts, technologies, equipment, and practices used in the production of recorded music. Topics covered include the basic principles of sound and hearing, essential concepts of audio, multi-track recording, recording instruments in popular music, vocal recording techniques, and multi-track editing. Prerequisite: MU 151, MU 156, MU 159

MU-157: Digital Audio Workstations II

This course will build on work done in MU 156 to use the Pro Tools system in a professional studio and production environment to optimize session outcomes. Students in this course will learn to streamline their workflow with a variety of advanced keyboard commands, editing techniques, routing methods. Students will complete the AVID Pro Tools 110 Course. Upon successful completion of both MU-156 and MU-157, students will be prepared to take the Avid 110 certificate test. Prerequisite: MU-156

MU-156: Digital Audio Workstations I

In this course students will gain an understanding of Digital Audio Workstations and the skills and knowledge needed to operate them. Students will become familiar with the recording, editing and mixing capabilities of Digital Audio Workstations and also learn the basics of computer systems, digital audio theory and file management. The information covered later in the course will enhance and deepen the student’s understanding of editing workflows, navigation techniques, virtual instruments, real-time plug-ins and automation. The complete Avid Pro Tools-101 Course is taught in his course along with EI’s DAW training methods.

MU-155: Introduction to Entertainment & Media Business

This course is designed to introduce the overall business structures of various types of music businesses highlighting those areas where music and business intersect. The music industry is comprised of various players that influence the music production and live event industries. It is important for any individual to understand all of the different components that impact this industry. Topics include: licensing and publishing, the vocabulary and terminology of the music industry, copyright collectives, performance rights organizations, music business deal structures, and the roles that a record producer, music publisher, booking agent, promoter, and tour manager play within the industry.

MU-154: Music Theory I

This course offers knowledge in the study of the workings of music and sound. Students will learn about reading music, song form, notation, rhythm, harmony, meters, tonality, and scales. Upon completion of this course, students will gain an understanding of the construction of music and gain the ability to communicate effectively with musicians, composers, directors, programmers, and producers in the professional audio production environment.

MU-153: Critical Listening

This course focuses on developing critical listening skills with particular emphasis on engineering analysis. Topics include psychoacoustics of various audio environments, critical listening and the identification of engineering techniques such as balance, panning, EQ, reverb, compression, delay, and timebased effects, instrument identification and song structure and terminology. Students will build their critical listening skills using recorded music from studio sessions, live concert material, and audio postproduction mixes from a variety of mixing techniques and producers. Prerequisite: MU-151.

MU-152: Beatology

This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of record production and the role that it plays in popular music. Students will learn about the role of a record producer in popular music. Students are introduced to the history of the MIDI concept, its principles and theory, and MIDI production techniques and how it relates to software based production. They are also introduced to MIDI control, troubleshooting, and the design of MIDI systems. Students will learn how MIDI is used in modern productions as well as gain an understanding of the FL Studio program. This class is also an in-depth study of how to construct a beat from inception to a final song. Students will learn about programming virtual instruments, creating drum sounds; song structure; and creating different types of musical styles.

MU-151: Recording I

The objective of this course is designed to clarify all the individual rolls and duties of those involved in record production and in a professional recording studio environment. This course will give the student an understanding of how the recording industry has moved towards a more individual approach to recording. In doing so, the student will have the basic knowledge for the rest of the classes. Students will also learn about, microphones, effects processors, monitoring systems, studio acoustics and how to run a recording session. Studio design is also discussed, along with studio operating principles and the mechanics of the studio environment. This course is designed to give the student a working knowledge of a professional recording studio.

BUS-126: Intro to Small Business and Management Techniques

This course provides the basic principles of operating a small business with a focus on management techniques. Topics include buying, pricing, promotions, location decisions, and planning as well as coverage of globalization, ethics, diversity, customer service, and innovation from a managerial perspective. Students will learn the importance of entrepreneurship and create a sound business plan.
